Overview

Burt’s Bees Lip Balm has been around for a long time (since 1991). It’s a favorite for many people, especially when they want to avoid petrolatum in their skin care. In addition, the base formula has several plant oils which can strengthen the skin barrier.

Burt’s Bees has many types and variations of lip products. In this post, I will discuss the original Burt’s Bees Lip Balm – Beeswax, some other variations of the lip balm, and frequently asked questions about these lip balms.

Ingredients

The ingredients in this formula are as follows:

  1. Cera Alba (Beeswax): Beeswax is a natural product that is made by honey bees. It can hydrate the skin and can form a barrier to preserve moisture. In addition, it has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties.
  2. Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil: Coconut oil can be amazing for lips. It acts as an emollient (rich in medium-chain fatty acids) to moisturize lips. It also has antimicrobial properties.
  3. Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil: Sunflower oil is a lightweight oil that can strengthen our skin barrier. It has a high concentration of linolenic acid, an essential fatty acid. It is also rich in Vitamin E which is an antioxidant.
  4. Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Oil: This is an essential oil that can give a tingly sensation to lips due to the presence of menthol in it. It can also give a temporary lip-plumping effect. However, in some people, it can also cause contact dermatitis.
  5. Lanolin: This is obtained from sheep’s wool. It is highly moisturizing and can soften the lips. It has been used in skincare since ancient times. It can help in healing dry and cracked lips. However, it can cause allergic reactions in some people.
  6. Tocopherol: It is a fat-soluble antioxidant with moisturizing properties. It can protect our lips from free radicals and reduce oxidative stress. In addition, it can hydrate our skin and strengthen the skin barrier.
  7. Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract: It is a potent antioxidant that can fight free radicals. In addition, it has anti-inflammatory and skin-soothing properties.
  8. Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil: This is an oil derived from soybean which is rich in fatty acids. It can moisturize the lips. It’s also rich in Vitamin E which is a potent antioxidant.
  9. Canola Oil (Huile De Colza): This is rich in essential fatty acids which can moisturize skin. It has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Vitamin E in this can reduce free radical damage.
  10. Limonene: This is a fragrance ingredient. It is naturally found in the peels of citrus fruits. It can cause sensitivity and skin irritation in some people.
  11. Linalool: This is a fragrance ingredient found in many plants like lavender, coriander, cinnamon, etc. It can lead to skin irritation in some people.
  12. Eugenol: This is a fragrance ingredient found in cloves, basil, bay leaves, etc. Just like the two fragrance ingredients above, it can also cause irritation in some people.

Overall, this lip balm has a mixture of moisturizing ingredients with antioxidant properties. The oils in this can soften the lip and reinforce the skin barrier. Some ingredients like lanolin, peppermint oil, and fragrance ingredients can cause irritation in some people.

This lip balm is free of parabens, phthalates, sulfates, and petrolatum.

Is it vegan?

This has some ingredients like lanolin and beeswax which are derived from animals. So, it is not vegan.

Is it cruelty-free?

Burt’s Bees brand is cruelty-free. This is what the Brand’s official website says:

“Burt’s Bees does not test its products on animals nor do we ask others to do so on our behalf. You’ll see the Leaping Bunny seal and our “cruelty-free” stance on our packaging to reinforce our commitment.”

Review

Burt’s Bees beeswax lip balm is a standard lip balm in the form of a stick. It comes with a seal around the cap. The brand also sells it in a round tin box.

Burt's Bees lip balm safety seal and appearance.

It is white in color and waxy in appearance. It glides smoothly on lips and instantly you get the moisturized feeling.

It does smell and taste minty probably due to peppermint oil. It sometimes feels tingly on the lips. I didn’t see any plumping effect on my lips which can happen with lip balms with peppermint oil.

In very windy cold weather, I had to use it multiple times as it was not enough when used a few times. It is not too soft so the stick won’t break and won’t melt away if you use it under your lipstick.

While it didn’t irritate my lips, it can do so in some people. Essential oils like peppermint oil and fragrance ingredients can irritate the skin. Lanolin can lead to allergic reactions in some people.

If you are dealing with any inflammatory skin condition which involves skin around the lips such as perioral dermatitis, it’s best to avoid it as it can exacerbate it.

If you are not a fan of peppermint, the brand has several different flavors to choose from (I have listed them below in this article).

In addition, there are a few lip balms by this brand that do not have any essential oils. I would prefer those over this one.

Pros

  • Multiple oils to soften skin.
  • Can strengthen the skin barrier.
  • Antioxidant benefits.

Cons

  • Can irritate skin in some people.
  • May not be moisturizing enough for extremely dry lips.

Price

You can get 1, 2, or 4 in single packaging. It will be the cheapest per piece if you buy multiple in one packaging.

  • Single lip balm is around $3.99
  • Two lip balms are around $6.89
  • Four lip balms are around $11.99

Where to buy

You don’t really have to hunt for this lip balm because it’s widely available in many online stores, pharmacies, and grocery stores.

FAQs

What are the different flavors?

Burt’s Bees lip balm has multiple flavors and they keep adding new ones. They also have a few limited-edition flavors.

  • Vanilla Bean Lip Balm
  • Wild Cherry Lip Balm
  • Sweet Mandarin Lip Balm
  • Tropical Pineapple Lip Balm
  • Dragon Fruit Lemon Lip Balm
  • Pomegranate Lip Balm
  • Pink Grapefruit Lip Balm
  • Strawberry Lip Balm
  • Cucumber Mint Lip Balm
  • Mango Lip Balm
  • Honey Lip Balm
  • Matcha And Honey Lip Balm
  • Passionfruit Lip Balm
  • Sweet Peach Lip Balm
  • Coconut & Pear Lip Balm Lip Balm

Do they have SPFs?

There are several types of Burt’s Bees lip balms – non-tinted and tinted. However, I have found only two types have SPF factors.

  • All-Weather Moisturizing Lip Balm with SPF 15
  • Sun Care Tinted Lip Balm with SPF 30 – It comes in two shades: Sienna Rose and Wild Peony

Does it dry out lips?

Burt’s Bees lip balm has several ingredients to moisturize skin. Oils are emollients and can make lips smooth and waxes can provide a barrier on the surface. It didn’t dry out my lips.

However, if your skin is sensitive to lanolin, peppermint oil, and fragrance ingredients, it can lead to irritation and dryness.

Is it good for chapped lips?

Yes, Burt’s Bees lip balm can be used on chapped lips. However, some people might find that it is not moisturizing enough. In addition, some ingredients in this can irritate the skin.

The brand has two more variants of lip products that can be used by someone with extremely dry lips:

  • Unscented Rescue balm – no essential oils or flavors
  • Ultra-Conditioning Lip Balm – no essential oils but has flavoring ingredients

I have not tried these but their ingredient list shows multiple oils to moisturize lips.

Summary and score

Burt’s Bees Lip Balm is moisturizing. The oils in this can help heal dry lips and strengthen the skin barrier.

However, it has few ingredients which can lead to allergy or skin irritation. There are other fragrance-free lip balms that I would prefer over this one.

Review Rating: 3.9/5
