Hello and welcome to Life Pathdoc!
I’m Dr. Jaspreet Oberoi, a board-certified pathologist with over 15 years of experience in the medical field. My specialization is in pathology, and I have a particular interest in skin pathology and hematopathology. These days, I’m more than just a pathologist – I’m your go-to source for all things skin-related right here at Life Pathdoc.
Note: All the articles at Life Pathdoc are for informational purposes only. If you are dealing with any skin issues, it’s best to see your doctor.
What you’ll find here
At Life Pathdoc, the main focus is writing about skin conditions in more simplified language, although sometimes it can still get a bit technical. I try to cover every topic in depth, so you’ll often see multiple articles related to one skin condition.
In addition, you will find articles on skincare ingredients and some everyday skincare basics. Every piece of information is a blend of research-based knowledge and personal experience in the medical field.
You’ll also find some reviews, but only for products I have used for long enough. For this reason, there will be fewer of them.
My background
I was born and raised in a small village in Punjab, India. I eventually moved to a bigger town for education and then to an even bigger town for medical school and medical residency in pathology.
The medical field is a long journey, and it takes years to reach the endpoint. You compete in entrance exams to get into medical school, and then again, you prepare for entrance exams to get into medical residency. You can even pursue fellowships after that.
After completing my training in India, I decided to move to the United States since my elder sister was already here. Now, moving to another country means you need credentials to practice accordingly. This was followed by my second training in pathology, which lasted for 4 years – 1 year at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit and 3 years at the University of Mississippi Medical Centre in Mississippi.
Yes, it was repeating the training again, but every country has its own methods, making this a great learning experience. I loved every moment of working in pathology.
By this time, life had changed for me. I had two little kids who were always wondering when I would be home. This is what brought this blog into existence. This blog is a way for me to stay connected with my medical background while writing about what I love and, at the same time, taking care of my kids.
What is a Pathologist?
Yes, I know some of you may be wondering, what is a pathologist? Let me give a brief overview.
A pathologist is a doctor who specializes in examining tissue from various areas of the body to make or confirm a diagnosis.
For example, let’s say you have a brown spot due to seborrheic keratosis that looks worrisome. Your dermatologist wants to make sure it’s nothing serious. They take a biopsy and send it to the lab, where the tissue is processed and then examined by a pathologist under a microscope to confirm a diagnosis.
For us pathologists, along with microscopic examination, the patient’s history, how the lesion looked, the age of the patient, and whether the lesion was treated – all these factors matter.
Pathology covers a wide range of topics, including surgical pathology specific to organs of the body (like dermatopathology, breast pathology, and so on), microbiology (which includes the study of microorganisms like bacteria, fungi, viruses, parasites, and so on), chemistry (which involves testing certain substances in body fluids), and finally, blood banking.
Personal skin journey
If you’re suffering from acne, rosacea, or any chronic skin condition, you’re not alone. Many of these conditions are very common, and I myself have struggled with rosacea and seborrheic dermatitis for years. The issue is that for some skin conditions, the underlying cause is not clear, making treatment equally challenging.
Through years of trial and error, my skin has finally settled with a few things – azelaic acid, retinal, and washes with zinc pyrithione or salicylic acid. I try to keep it as simple as possible.
Fun things
In addition to pathology and skincare, I love traveling with my family, playing peekaboo and fun games, or just watching some animated shows with my kids. I also enjoy cooking – something both my husband and I love, especially when it comes to trying new foods.
