Once a day sunscreen has been in the spotlight for the last few years. This is what brought Evy technology sunscreens to my attention. Evy Daily UV Face mousse SPF 30 was the first sunscreen I tried from this range and I was smitten by that.

I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the higher SPFs, so I bought the Evy Daily Defence Face Mousse SPF 50 and EVY Sunscreen Mousse SPF 50 (their blue bottle with orange cap).

I was sent several Evy products (PR sample/gifted) by the brand to try as well (with no obligation to review them – all thoughts are my own).

My skin

I have been dealing with rosacea for the last several years. Some chemical sunscreens sting my skin and a lot of physical sunscreens dry out my skin. So, I have several sunscreens in rotation and use them how my day is going to be: if I am going to do makeup, go for a long walk or run, and so on. I love chemical/organic sunscreens since they are easy to reapply.

Evy Technology patent formula

EVY is a Sweden-based brand. The products from this range are recommended by the Swedish Vitiligo Association and a lot of dermatologists. Many sports teams use their products as well.

The Evy products have a unique mousse texture which makes them easy and fun to use. They are well known because of their claims that their sunscreens provide protection for longer than traditional sunscreens.

How do they do it? They use a special patent, with which the sunscreen mousse spreads throughout the top layer of skin, instead of sitting on the surface of the skin. It carries the active ingredients deeper into the skin, protecting them from oxidation.

This makes these actives long-lasting. Due to this, they are able to use lower concentrations of UV filters in their sunscreens. The unique formula of these sunscreens also protects the skin from external irritants, heat, wind, and water.

They have different categories of sunscreens: one for outdoor/water activities, one for kids, and one for daily use. You can find the whole range from SPF 10 to SPF 50. All the EVY sunscreens have 5 stars Boots UVA rating. Other than Evy Daily UV Face Mousse SPF 30, all products are vegan.

Claims

What the brand says:

” A daily protection against UV and HEV radiation. An intensely-moisturising, anti-ageing facial mousse that strengthens the skin’s protective barrier and prevents early signs of ageing and hyperpigmentation. The active skincare technology, combined with the active ingredients, gives the skin long-lasting and effective protection against UV light and free radicals that may be formed by the sun and pollution.”

Sunscreen/ UV filters

All the sunscreens in the range have the same 5 sunscreen filters (as mentioned below) in different concentrations except the Evy Sunscreen SPF 10 and SPF 20. The comparison between different sunscreens is mentioned further in the post.

If you look closely, this is the only sunscreen in the whole range that has a PA ++++ rating. It gives me a little more reassurance that I am adequately protected.

The UV filters in this sunscreen are:

  1. Octocrylene: Protects mainly from UVB and some rays in the UVA II range, and stabilizes other photo-unstable UV filters like Avobenzone.
  2. Avobenzone aka Butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane: Protects across the whole UVA range, not photostable but other UV filters help to stabilize it.
  3. Uvinul A Plus aka Diethylamino hydroxybenzoyl hexyl benzoate aka DHHB: New generation UV filter that covers the whole UVA range.
  4. Tinosorb S aka Bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine aka Bemotrizinol: New filter that is broad-spectrum and very photostable (covers the whole UVB and UVA range).
  5. Uvinul T 150 aka Ethylhexyl Triazone: Great photo-stable UVB filter.

Other notable ingredients

This sunscreen is marketed for protection from high-energy visible light which can lead to premature aging and worsen hyperpigmentation.

An ingredient that holds promise is Bis (Cyano Butylacetate Anthracenediylidene). This is also called “Micah”. Now this is different from Mica – an ingredient commonly found in some tinted sunscreens, highlighters, or other makeup products. This ingredient is found in only a handful of products.

It can prevent the formation of reactive oxygen species and free radicals (in other words oxidative stress), due to UVA I rays and visible light. It can also decrease the inflammatory markers released due to UVA exposure. Still, we need more evidence proving its effects on the skin.

So, I will not just rely on this ingredient for blue light protection. I would pair my sunscreen with an antioxidant serum and/or layer a tinted moisturizer or foundation on top to get the added benefit of blue light protection from iron oxides.

It also has some additional antioxidants like Nymphaea Alba Flower Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate, and Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate which can protect from oxidative stress.

Water resistance

Just like the Daily UV Face mousse SPF 30, this also retains over 50% of its SPF protection after a 40-minute water test.

Staining of clothes

Many sunscreens can stain clothes and it’s really hard to use them with white shirts/T-shirts. However, some Evy sunscreens including Daily Defense Face Mousse SPF 50, contain Tetrasodium Glutamate Diacetate, which prevents the staining of clothes.

Application

All the Evy sunscreens come in an aerosol aluminum bottle. This sunscreen bottle is beige in color (the sunscreen is not tinted).  As per the official website, shake the bottle then turn it upside down and press the nozzle. If you don’t turn it upside down, you can run out of gas. One golf ball size is enough for an adult’s face.

In the morning, I wash my face and use an antioxidant serum and moisturizer. Then I use this sunscreen. In hot humid climates, I usually skip my moisturizer and straight away get to the sunscreen part.

I shake the bottle, turn it upside down, and press the nozzle; the white foam will be in your hands. Now be gentle when you press the nozzle at the start, or you will end up with a lot of product.

I usually like to take it two times: in two small walnut sizes.  I take a walnut size of mousse, rub it between my fingers, apply it on the lower half of my face, and then take another to apply on the upper half of my face.

In comparison to their Daily UV Mousse SPF 30, I was expecting SPF 50 mousse to be dense and heavy. But it had the same light fluffy texture. If I were asked to guess just from the mousse texture and feel, I wouldn’t be able to differentiate.

Texture.
The light and fluffy texture of Evy sunscreen Daily Defence face mousse SPF 50.

So how does my skin feel about this sunscreen? Let’s see:

  1. Burning or Stinging? No, not at all. With higher SPF, the concentration of sunscreen filters is higher, but this sunscreen caused no burning or stinging on my rosacea-prone skin. As per the EVY team, the total percentage of UV filters ranges from 9 to 14% in their sunscreens. In addition, the percentage of octocrylene is 4-5 % in all the sunscreens. Though Octocrylene is the second ingredient in the list, it caused no problems for me (probably the lower concentration). If you take a peek at other sunscreens, the percentage of Octocrylene is usually around 10%.
  2. Heavy?  It absorbs quickly into my skin. Just the way a serum or lightweight moisturizer does. No feeling of heaviness.
  3. Shiny? It doesn’t add a lot of shininess to my face, it looks just natural, as with a moisturizer.
  4. Stickiness? No sticky feeling. But I know some people find it sticky – probably the climate and different layers of skin care underneath may affect this. As per the official website they recommend rinsing off if it feels sticky but honestly, I won’t do that. You can also see the picture below showing a blot test – the blotting paper doesn’t stick to my skin (you can see a comparison with other Evy sunscreens below or check out my review of Avene Intense Protect SPF 50+ to see the difference).
  5. White cast? No cast, it is an organic/chemical sunscreen. Also, no yellowing of the skin.
  6. Eye stinging? I never had issues with it. But I am very careful when I apply it around my eyes. It stays put and doesn’t migrate into my eyes. Do note though, it has avobenzone and octocrylene which can sting the eyes in some people.
  7. Drying out of skin? No, it adds a layer of moisture and the skin stays soft all day long.

Reapplication

No pilling on reapplication. In addition, even with multiple reapplications on a beach day, it didn’t feel heavy. During normal days, I usually reapply once in the mid-day.

Will I skip reapplication?

Evy Technology has done several tests on their sunscreens with convincing results. These include sweating, water exposure, and abrasion. However, they do mention that lab tests cannot simulate real-life scenarios.

So, I will not skip reapplication based on these tests. In addition, some of us may not be applying enough in the first place. So if I was out doing active water sports or sweating heavily, I would still reapply every 2 hours.

Performance

I have tested this sunscreen long enough – used up the whole 75 ml bottle and I am on my second bottle. I have worn it to the beach, normal “everyday” days, and hot humid days.

I have never burned or had any redness out in the sun. So, it works really well for me. The reapplication is super smooth. It acts as a great makeup base as well. I also use it as my lip sunscreen.

It feels weightless and does not smother my skin. I actually forgot I have sunscreen on my face. Also, it washes off with my usual cleanser (Dr. Sam’s Flawless Cleanser). I don’t have to be too aggressive to take it off as with some other water-resistant sunscreens.

Value for money

Depending on where you live, there will be quite a variation in the price you pay for it (around $37, plus shipping in some cases). For me, it’s totally worth the money. To be honest, I rarely finish a sunscreen this fast, because I have so many in rotation. But I loved using it.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Innovative mousse texture which is easy to spread on the skin
  • Antioxidants for protection from oxidative stress
  • The lesser concentration of UV filters makes it sensitive skin-friendly
  • No heavy or sticky feeling
  • No pilling on reapplication
  • Recyclable packaging

Cons

  • May take some time before you get used to dispensing the adequate amount
  • Hard to get in the US and high shipping charges in some cases

Will I buy it again?

Yes, for sure!

Where to buy?

If you are in the US, it’s hard to get it as there are just a few online shops that ship to the US. In addition, since it is an aerosol the shipping usually takes some time.

The places you may get this are – Cultbeauty.com (probably the cheapest of all), 50ml.com (pricey, high shipping cost), and Ifsogo.com (you will need to buy at least 6 cans, better if you buy along with a friend or a family member).

Review score

Review Rating: 5/5

This is an all-chemical sunscreen with a mix of new and old-generation sunscreen filters. It comes out as a mousse and absorbs quickly. It leaves a natural finish.

Comparison analysis

Now as I mentioned above, Evy has different categories or types of sunscreens.

  • Blue bottles with orange caps: They are specifically designed for outdoor and water activities since they are extra water resistant.
  • Blue bottles with yellow caps are the kid’s formula. These have a very simple formulation to minimize any potential reactions.
  • Beige bottles labeled as Daily Defence or UV face mousse for daily wear.

Let’s see how they are different:

Evy Daily UV Face Mousse SPF 30 versus Evy Daily Defence Face Mousse SPF 50

The first obvious difference is the SPF 50 vs. SPF 30. I was expecting a lot of difference in these sunscreens. but surprise, surprise – they are exactly the same in texture and finish.

They both come in similar packaging – beige bottle 75 ml. SPF 50 is on the pricier side.  The UV filters are the same, but the ingredients are a little different. Evy Daily Defence Face Mousse SPF 50 has the addition of Micah for blue light protection.

But both of these have other antioxidants as well which can help against oxidative stress. Evy Daily UV Face mousse SPF 30 is not vegan (it has hydrolyzed silk and collagen). You can read the detailed review of Evy sunscreen Daily UV Face Mousse 30 here.

Evy Sunscreen Mousse SPF 50 versus Evy Daily Defence UV Mousse SPF 50

Dense mousse and application of Evy sunscreen SPF 50.
Post application finish and blotting test of Evy Sunscreen SPF 50.
The finish of Evy Sunscreen SPF 50 is shiny and it is sticky as you can see with the blot test.

Evy sunscreen mousse is also SPF 50, but it doesn’t have a PA rating and they don’t highlight blue light protection on this sunscreen. However, this does have some good antioxidants. This is extra water-resistant so is particularly useful for water activities and beach days.

The biggest difference I found was the texture. The sunscreen mousse SPF 50 has a denser texture and it takes a bit of time to rub it in. The daily defence SPF 50 on the other hand has a lighter texture and rubs in very quickly.

Evy sunscreen SPF 50 doesn’t feel heavy. It does look a little shiny and is sticky as compared to Daily Defence SPF 50 (see the picture showing blotting paper sticking to my hand). But not to the extent that it makes me avoid it. I love using it on beach days. I will probably keep one for those days.

The other difference is the price and quantity you get. Evy sunscreen mousse SPF 50 comes in a 100 ml can and is cheaper so it’s more cost-effective.

The finish of Evy Sunscreen SPF 50 Kids is a little shiny and it’s somewhat sticky as seen with the blot test.
Comparison of finish: Evy Daily Defence Face Mousse SPF 50 versus Evy Kids SPF 50.

Evy Kids SPF 50 is a very simple formulation in comparison to other sunscreens in the Evy range. This one doesn’t have any antioxidants. This decreases the chances of any irritation especially when it comes to the delicate skin of little children.

This sunscreen is very water resistant (so can be used on beach days). If you have very sensitive skin, this might be a better choice in comparison to other sunscreens.

The texture of this is somewhat less emollient than Evy Sunscreen mousse SPF 50, but it is shinier and a little sticky as compared to Evy Sunscreen Daily Defence Face mousse SPF 50. Of the sunscreens mentioned in this post, Evy sunscreen SPF 50 is the shiniest and stickiest on my skin.

This comes in a 150 ml can. This price is the same or comparable to EVY sunscreen mousse SPF 50 and cheaper than Daily Defense Face mousse SPF 50, and you get 150 ml. So, overall, this is the most cost-effective of all SPF 50s.

Summary

Overall, all these sunscreens perform well and protect from sun rays. I don’t get any redness out in the sun with these.

  • If you have oily skin, Evy Daily UV Face mousse SPF 30 and Evy Daily Defence Face mousse SPF 50 may be the best choices.
  • If you have dry skin, both Evy sunscreen SPF 50 and Evy sunscreen SPF 50 kids may be better choices
