“What is it about the Evy sunscreen that everyone keeps raving about?” I often thought about it. I had gone to their website back and forth so many times to read about their special technology. I was eyeing the Evy sunscreen for the last 8 months, it was just stuck somewhere in the back of my head. So, I went ahead and got it.

I have not seen many people with rosacea talk about it and some of you might be thinking “Are you crazy, you should use mineral sunscreen, they are the gentlest.” Well, I have never been able to use mineral sunscreen on my face exclusively. They dry out my skin, so I use physical and chemical sunscreens in rotation.

So now let’s talk about the star of the show (it’s a long post and I have tried to cover as much as possible about the EVY sunscreen and their technology, so have a cup of warm tea or coffee with you).

The brand

EVY is a brand based in Sweden. Their products (especially EVY Sunscreen) are recommended by a lot of dermatologists and the Swedish Vitiligo Association.

The products are recommended for people with sensitive skin, sun eczema, sun allergy, or people born with albinism. They can be used for ages 6 months and up. The products are free from perfumes and preservatives.

They have a whole range of sunscreens ranging from SPF 10 to SPF 50. Their blue bottles are specifically designed for outdoor and water activities since they are extra water resistant.

Most of their sunscreens have antioxidants or skin-loving ingredients, however, the kid’s formulas are very simple to minimize any potential reactions.

All the EVY sunscreens have 5 stars Boots UVA rating (Optimal UVA protection or over 90% compared to the SPF/ UVB, for example in SPF 30, UVA protection is over 90% of SPF 30 or 90% of 97% UVB protection).

All the products are vegan, except Daily UV Face Mousse SPF 30, which contains silk extract and collagen. Also, the products are not tested on animals.

The patent

“The base formula creates an osmotic membrane, i.e., a semipermeable membrane in the skin. The formula contains both lipophilic and hydrophilic components in two phases. This two-dimensional filter membrane reinforces the skin’s natural properties instead of adding extra substances to the skin to relieve symptoms. The formula’s lipophilic components prevent immediate contact between water and water-soluble substances and the treated skin’s hydrophilic parts, thus preventing drying of the skin. During use hydrophilic centers also appear in the lipophilic regions in such a way that normal sweating has basically no effect and, through the osmotic membrane, the skin’s natural ability to maintain an even balance between outflows and inflows (of e.g., moisture and heat) is restored.”

By Evy Technology

Due to EVY’s patented formula, the sunscreen mousse spreads throughout the top layer of skin, instead of staying on the surface. It also carries active ingredients further into the skin layer and protects them from oxidation.

This makes the active ingredients, such as sun filters and antioxidants, extra long-lasting, while still being gentle on skin. Due to this unique technology, they are able to use a lesser amount of active ingredients (lesser amount of sun filters in EVY sunscreen).

In addition, it protects from heat, wind, water stress, and skin irritants such as chlorinated or salty water, algae, or soap

Claims

Daily protection against sun damage and external pollutants. The product is enriched with vitamins C and E, hyaluronic acid, collagen, and several nourishing ingredients that help prevent hyperpigmentation and sun damage.

EVY is lightweight and doesn’t leave a white film or clog pores. The gentle, allergy-tested formula is also suitable for people with eczema or acne.

Sunscreen/ UV filters

  1. Tinosorb S aka Bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine aka Bemotrizinol: Broad-spectrum and very photostable (covers the whole UVB and UVA range).
  2. Uvinul A Plus aka Diethylamino hydroxybenzoyl hexyl benzoate aka DHHB: Covers the whole UVA range.
  3. Avobenzone aka Butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane: Protects across the whole UVA range, not photostable but other UV filters help to stabilize it.
  4. Octocrylene: Protects mainly from UVB and some UVA II range, and stabilizes other photo-unstable UV filters.
  5. Uvinul T 150 aka Ethylhexyl Triazone: Great photo-stable UVB filter.

Other beneficial ingredients

  • Sodium Hyaluronate: It is a sodium salt of hyaluronic acid and is great in hydrating the skin by holding on to water. Since it has a smaller molecular weight than hyaluronic acid, it can penetrate deeper.
  • Sodium Palmitoyl Proline: Soothes sensitive skin.
  • Nymphaea Alba Flower Extract: Full of powerful antioxidants, protects against oxidative stress, and improves uneven skin tone.
  • Hydrolysed silk: It has moisture-binding properties.
  • Allantoin: Heals and regenerates the skin.
  • Tocopheryl Acetate: It has antioxidant properties and protects from pollution and other environmental stressors.
  • Hydrolysed Collagen: Great moisturizer and humectant that helps skin to hold onto water.
  • Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate: It has antioxidant properties, evens skin tone, and is anti-microbial so useful in people with acne.

Water resistance

It retains over 50% of its SPF protection after a 40-minute water test.

Staining clothes

Some of their products like Evy sunscreen Daily UV Face Mousse 30, contain Tetrasodium Glutamate Diacetate, which prevents clothes from staining.

Application

EVY sunscreen comes in a hygienic aerosol aluminum bottle. The bottle is beige in color but the sunscreen is not tinted. As per the “directions to use”, shake the bottle, turn it upside down, and press the nozzle (you can run out of gas if the bottle is not turned upside down). One golf ball size is enough to cover your arm.

On pressing the nozzle, a silky white mousse comes out. I take a walnut size of mousse, run it between my fingers for 4-5 seconds (don’t rub for too long, or it will disappear between your fingers), and apply it on the lower face – cheeks, nose, chin, and lips (yes lips too, isn’t that awesome).

Then, I take another walnut-size mousse and use it on my forehead, around my eyes, and ears. I take a golf ball size for my neck and chest.

So how does it feel on the skin, let’s see:

  1. Does it burn my skin? Nil. It does not produce any sensation on my skin – no burning, cooling, warm or stinging sensation. I don’t know how they did it, despite having Avobenzone and Octocrylene.
As per the EVY team, the total percentage of UV filters ranges from 9 to 14% in their sunscreens, which might be the reason that my skin did not react to it. Also, the percentage of octocrylene is 4-5 % in all the sunscreens. In most other sunscreens, the percentage of Octocrylene is around 10%.
  2. Does it feel heavy? Nope. It just melts into my skin and after a while, I don’t feel anything on the skin. Anyone with rosacea can relate to me, the redness and flushing, you get from those thicker heavier sunscreens that can trap heat. After 20 minutes, I wipe my lips lightly, as I am paranoid about ingesting sunscreen.
  3. Does it feel sticky? Not for me, but I have seen some reviewers saying that it feels sticky. I think a lot of that depends on the weather around you. Also, it depends on how many layers of skincare products you use underneath. I have yet not tried their SPF 50 sunscreens or other formulations, so I cannot speak for them.
As per EVY’s website “Should be non-sticky after 10 mins. If not, you’ve applied too much and the excess can be rinsed off with water.”
  4. White cast? None, and does not look yellow on the skin as with some other chemical sunscreens.
  5. Eye stinging?: I have sensitive eyes, so I am always very careful about applying skincare around my eyes. During the course of the day, it didn’t run into my eyes.
Be aware though, it has avobenzone and octocrylene which are known to sting the eyes in some people and I have read some reviews where people said that this sunscreen stung their eyes.
  6. Does it dry out my skin? No, not at all, in fact by the end of the day my skin still felt soft.

Reapplication

I usually reapply in the mid-day. It reapplies smoothly with no pilling. My face looked just like it would with a moisturizer, so no extra oiliness or shininess after reapplication.

Once-a-day application?

Evy daily UV face is tested to hold its SPF for 6 hours. Also, several tests like abrasion, sweating, etc, have been done on these sunscreens with very convincing results.

When I wear Evy sunscreen, I feel confident that I have good protection on my skin. However, I would still reapply every 2 hours, if I was out in the sun for long.

Value for money

This particular sunscreen comes in 75 ml. The price may vary depending on where you buy (around $34.50 to $36 at some retailers). Not cheap but my sensitive skin loves this sunscreen. So for me, it’s worth every penny.

My take

EVY sunscreen, Daily UV Face Mousse 30, is a gem and it’s totally worth its hype. I am glad I tried it, otherwise, I would have missed such an awesome, innovative sunscreen.

I think this is great for every skin type. It feels weightless and many times, I would forget I have it on my skin. I don’t run to wash it off as soon as I get home, as I do with some other sunscreens.

When I first started using it, I thought it might start irritating my skin one or the other day, but nope, no reactions at all. It protected me well when I went for long walks, not even a hint of redness. I can also use it on my lips (guilty of not using enough lip sunscreen). A total believer now!
