Carmex is cruelty-free but not vegan. Read on for details about what the terms ‘cruelty-free’ and ‘vegan’ mean, why Carmex isn’t vegan, and whether it tests on animals. We will also explore alternative options to Carmex.

Carmex lip balm packaging.

Carmex is a very popular brand famous for its lip balms. Most people have used one or the other lip balm from the brand at some point in their life. Some lip products are very popular for use on cold sores

However, some people are concerned about whether Carmex is cruelty-free and vegan.

Let’s discuss more about it!!

Is Carmex cruelty-free?

Well, the brand mentions on its website that they do not test its products on animals.

This is what the brand says:

“We never test on animals. Carmex® founder Alfred Woelbing believed animal testing to be uselessly and needlessly cruel, and that stance against animal testing has remained a part of our culture. All Carmex® products undergo a thorough chemical analysis before they leave our facility. Many Carma Labs Inc. products are available over the counter (OTC), and as such, we run specific analyses to ensure that all testing regulations and requirements by government jurisdictions, such as the FDA, are met and that our products are safe and effective for our consumers.”

So, yay for that. They clearly say that they do not test on animals and also test all their products in labs to make sure they are effective and safe for their customers.

Moving to the next part.

Is Carmex vegan?

Although Carmex is cruelty-free, it doesn’t mean it’s vegan as well. The cruelty-free term simply tells us that they don’t test on animals. To know for sure if it’s vegan, one has to check the ingredients.

Ingredients

Below are the ingredients in their original classic lip balm medicated.

  • Active Ingredients
    • Camphor 1.70%, White Petrolatum 45.30%
  • Inactive Ingredients
    • Lanolin, Cetyl esters, Theobroma cacao seed butter, paraffinum liquidum, Beeswax, menthol, salicylic acid, phenol, vanillin, flavor

The ingredient list shows two ingredients derived from animals, so Carmex is not vegan /vegetarian.

These ingredients are:

  • Beeswax: This is a wax obtained from honey bees. It acts as a barrier on the skin preventing moisture loss.
  • Lanolin: This is a waxy substance obtained from sheep’s wool. The wool is centrifuged to separate this oily material from other substances. It is very hydrating and can strengthen the skin barrier.

So, clearly, if you are looking for a vegan option, this will not fit your criteria.

Alternatives

Here are two brands that I am aware of that can be good alternatives to Carmex.

1. Eco Lips Balm

This brand has several great lip balms. It is vegan and cruelty-free. They too use waxy material in their lip balms which are obtained from plants.

I don’t know about every lip balm but many lip balms do not contain essential oils, which makes them a great option for someone with sensitive skin. View on [Amazon] [Eco Lips].

2. Hurraw Lip Balms

This brand is also vegan and cruelty-free. They have several options from tinted to non-tinted. They also have unscented lip balm, which can be a great option for someone with sensitive lips. View on [Amazon] [Hurraw].

Summary

To summarize, Carmex is cruelty-free but it’s not vegan.
