What is Carmex?
Carmex is a brand very well known for its lip balms. There are different types of Carmex lip products. The original is the classic version which was the first formula developed by the company. This is the medicated classic lip balm which was first sold in jars and later the tube versions came followed by the stick.
In 2010, the brand introduced Carmex Cold sore treatment along with Daily care and Comfort care range.
Daily care is the one with sunscreen filters and SPF. Comfort care is based on plant oils and is free of petrolatum.
Ingredients
The ingredients in Carmex are a mix of occlusives like petrolatum, emollients like cocoa butter, and cooling agents like menthol.
Below is the detailed list of ingredients in Carmex Classic Lip Balm Medicated. Camphor (1.70%) and petrolatum (45.30%) are listed as active ingredients in the formula.
1. White petrolatum
This is a derivative of petroleum. Rest assured, for using it in cosmetics, the so-called toxic substances are removed from it. It is the best occlusive moisturizer. Occlusives are a type of moisturizer that can form a barrier and can prevent moisture loss. In addition, it can protect the skin from outside elements.
2. Camphor
Camphor can be found in many skin care products from lip balms to body lotions. It can relieve pain, and itching and has antimicrobial properties (antibacterial and antifungal). However, it can cause irritation in some people.
3. Lanolin
This is a waxy substance obtained from sheep’s wool. It is very moisturizing and can strengthen the skin barrier. It forms a barrier on the skin and prevents moisture loss.
4. Cetyl esters
It is a waxy substance that can lubricate the skin. It closely resembles wax obtained from sperm whales but it does not mean it is derived from whales.
5. Theobroma cacao seed butter
Cocoa seed butter is rich in fatty acids which act as emollients to soften skin. It is also rich in vitamin E which is an antioxidant and can prevent damage from free radicals.
6. Paraffinum liquidum
This is another name for mineral oil. Mineral oil is an occlusive moisturizer that forms a barrier on the skin and prevents water loss from the skin. It does not penetrate into the skin.
7. Beeswax
This is a wax derived from honey bees. It has moisturizing, antimicrobial, and wound-healing properties. However, if one is allergic to bee products, they should not use any product containing beeswax.
8. Menthol
This is a compound that can be obtained from peppermint oil. It produces a cooling sensation when applied to the skin. This can relieve pain and itching. However, it can irritate the skin as well.
It can also give a temporary plumping effect to lips.
9. Salicylic acid
This is beta hydroxy acid which can exfoliate dead skin cells. In addition, it can decrease inflammation. However, the skin on the lips is very thin and it can lead to dryness and irritation.
10. Phenol
This compound has antimicrobial properties. It can cause skin irritation in some people.
11. Vanillin
It is a flavoring ingredient derived from vanilla. It also has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties.
12. Flavor
The label doesn’t give any details about it.
Different flavors
The classic Carmex lip balm does not have any flavors. However, the Daily Care and Comfort Care line of Carmex has several flavors.
What does it do to your lips?
Carmex lip balm contains a mixture of oils and waxes that can soften the lips. Ingredients in Carmex, such as petrolatum and mineral oil, are excellent occlusive moisturizers that form a barrier on the lips.
In addition, it includes ingredients like camphor and menthol, which can provide a tingly or cooling sensation.
Salicylic acid acts as an exfoliant, helping to slough away dead skin cells.
Side effects
Carmex has some ingredients that can cause skin sensitivity and irritation.
- Lanolin and beeswax can lead to allergic reactions in some people.
- Menthol and camphor can lead to a tingly and cooling sensation. However, in people with sensitive skin, this can lead to irritation.
- Salicylic acid may lead to dryness in people with sensitive skin.
- Flavor ingredients can sometimes be a source of irritation.
My experience
I tried the tube version of classic lip balm medicated. The tube is 10 grams and is yellow in color with a red cap.
Once you squeeze the tube, a thick waxy balm comes out. It applies beautifully on the lips. It does give a tingly and cooling sensation while applying.

It gives a sheen to the lips as if you have a gloss on your lips. You can smell that minty smell while you apply it.
It stays on and keeps my lips moisturized for the most part of the day. It did not cause any irritation or burning but I am not a fan of the tingly feeling on the lips.

Pros
- Petrolatum and waxes form a barrier on the lips.
- Softens and moisturizes the lips.
Cons
- There are some ingredients (like menthol, camphor, and phenol) in this balm that can cause irritation and sensitivity in some people.
Price
As is with most lip balms, if you buy multiple in one packaging, the price per piece will be less. The price will vary from vendor to vendor too.
Below is the rough guide:
- You can get one tube for around $2.49
- You can get a pack of 3 tubes for around $4.99
- You can get the jar of .25 oz for around $1.89
Where to buy
Just like Burt’s Bees lip balms, Carmex is easily available in pharmacies and many online stores.

Yes, for some people, Carmex may help relieve pain and itching associated with cold sores. However, it contains ingredients like menthol and camphor that could potentially cause irritation.
The brand has another product that may be more suitable for cold sores. It is “Multi-Symptom 3-in-1 Cold Sore Treatment” [Amazon] [Walmart]. Its main ingredients are petrolatum and benzocaine. Benzocaine can help in relieving pain and discomfort associated with cold sores.

2. Is Carmex addictive?
There have been many rumors suggesting that Carmex is addictive. However, none of the ingredients in this lip balm can be linked to it.
The ingredients like menthol and camphor can lead to a tingling or cooling sensation. Some people like this and it may be the reason why people use it again and again.
On the other hand, menthol and camphor can also cause irritation and dryness if you are sensitive to them. The dry feeling of lips makes one use lip balm more often.
3. Does Carmex have glass in it?
There is no glass or any form of glass in Carmex lip balm.
4. Does Carmex dry out your lips?
Carmex lip balm is meant to add moisture to the lips. The ingredient petrolatum is an excellent occlusive and makes lips soft. However, there are a few ingredients that may be problematic for some people leading to irritation and dryness.
5. Why does Carmex tingle?
Carmex lip balm has ingredients like camphor and menthol which can lead to a tingly and cooling sensation.
6. Why does Carmex burn?
If you feel a burning sensation when applying Carmex lip balm, either you have an open sore or wound on your lips or one of the ingredients is irritating your lips. It’s best to stop using it and use an alternative to heal your skin.
7. Is Carmex good for sunburned lips?
Sunburned lips can present with dryness, peeling, and pain. Carmex can benefit by adding a layer of moisture. The camphor and menthol can cause a cooling sensation and relieve some pain, but these can also cause irritation and worsen dryness.
If your sunburn is painful or you feel burning on your lips while using Carmex, it’s best to not use it and look for a lip free of potential irritants like Cerave healing ointment.
The classic range has a stick form which has SPF 15 factor [Amazon] [Walmart]. It has chemical sunscreen filters – Octinoxate 7.50% and Oxybenzone 4.00% to protect lips from UV rays.
However, these do not cover the UVA spectrum entirely so I would rather use another lip sunscreen for broad-spectrum protection. It also has petrolatum, camphor, and menthol in addition to other ingredients.
8. Does Carmex make your lips bigger?
Carmex cannot make your lips bigger. However, ingredients like menthol can lead to a temporary plumping effect on the lips.
9. What happens if you use too much Carmex?

This rumor has been going on for years that lip balms contain whale sperm. So, NO, Carmex doesn’t have whale sperm.
In addition, whale sperm is not equal to sperm whale. A sperm whale is a type of whale. Carmex doesn’t mention any whale-derived ingredients.
